Our researchers invent tools to enrich how we study, understand, and heal the brain. A breakthrough microscopy technique developed at the McGovern Institute is now used in labs around the world, revealing previously hidden molecular structures and neural circuits, and providing deeper insights into brain structure and function. We engineer smart bionic limbs that communicate with the brain, and soft-bodied robots and sophisticated probes that seamlessly integrate with biological tissues. We build magnetic nanodiscs and molecular syringes for innovative drug delivery, and molecular MRI sensors that improve the accuracy and precision of brain imaging. We leverage the tools of AI to optimize protein engineering and to mine the natural world for innovative new strategies to treat disease.
